Ashley Colip – Norton
Ashley says she caught the “golf bug” early in life, at age 12. She played golf all four years in
high school – on the boys team – and at first she was “scared to do my best”. Through her
experience on the boys team, she developed confidence in her golf game that she transferred to the classroom and beyond. A leader in clubs, organizations and church, Ashley also played
volleyball and held a part-time job, and graduated #1 in her class. Ashley will attend the
University of Kansas to study physical therapy.
Jeff Jarvis – Phillipsburg
When he started playing golf four years ago, Jeff quickly learned that the game could not be
mastered overnight. With a self-described “short fuse”, Jeff says he needed to learn patience to succeed at golf, and it’s clear from his golf success that he learned well: Kansas 3-A individual state champion, KJGA Stroke Play Champion, KJGA Junior Match Play Champion, and KJGA Player of the Year. But golf also gave him lessons in sportsmanship, honesty and how to make lasting friendships – things he knows will be needed to succeed in life. At Washburn University, Jeff will play golf and study to become an athletic trainer.
Gabrielle Reimer – Meade
Gabrielle plans to study pre-journalism, or perhaps law and international studies at the University of Kansas, and believes that what she learned from golf will help her succeed. Golf, she says, requires “steadfastness” and has taught her patience, perseverance, and the importance of a work ethic. It’s obvious she applied these skills throughout high school as she became a leader in clubs, participated in track and cross country, and graduated at the top of her class.
Tim Roesch – Quinter
“Golf”, says Tim, “can never be solved” and requires discipline. What he learned from playing
golf has helped Tim manage his Type-I diabetes for seven years, helping him participate in many activities – golf, football, basketball, cross country, SADD, Student Council, church youth group, honor choir, forensics – and make the Honor Roll every semester. That discipline will serve Tim well at Tabor College, where he will major in graphic design.
Carmen Thompson – Coldwater
Carmen plans to be a nurse practitioner, and there’s no doubt she’ll achieve her goal. In Middle
School she set a goal of maintaining a 4.0 GPA through high school – and did it, becoming
valedictorian of her graduating class. She wanted to play golf, so she had to compete on the boys team – and did it, going to State for two years. A leader in virtually every one of her many activities, Carmen also found time to help beginners who tried out for the golf team. She’ll attend Ft. Hays State University to major in nursing.
