Please feel free to contact the KGA office if you have any questions.

Watson gets U.S. Open invite

Tom Watson, who won the 1982 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach and contended for much of last week's Masters, will play in this year's U.S. Open thanks to a special exemption from the United States Golf Association.

Watson has played in the previous four U.S. Opens held at Pebble Beach -- in 1972, '82, '82 and 2000. He hasn't played in the U.S. Open since 2003, when he led after 18 holes before finishing tied for 28th.

"I am deeply grateful to the USGA for extending me the invitation to play in the U.S. Open at one of my favorite golf courses in the world, Pebble Beach Golf Links," Watson said in a statement released by the USGA. "Some of my life's favorite times have been spent near Stillwater Cove. I know there will be more this coming June."

Watson lost the Open Championship in a playoff last year. He shot 67 in the opening round of last week's Masters and ended up in a tie for 18th.

Watson, 60, has eight major titles to his credit and has played in 30 U.S. Opens. He's a two-time runner-up in addition to his 1982 title at Pebble Beach which included his legendary chip-in on the 71st hole to edge Jack Nicklaus.

KGF fundraising events upcoming

The Kansas Golf Foundation’s annual Golf Marathon is set for April 26 at Leawood South Country Club. Golfers will play as many holes as possible that day. They can solicit donations on a holes-played basis or on a flat rate. Anyone interested in the marathon can simply go to the new website: marathon.kansasgolf.org. It will have all the information on how to get involved. You can also contact The Foundation at foundation@kansasgolf.org or (785) 482-4833 Ext. 205.

On Aug. 9, the KGF Team Championship will return to Flint Hills National Golf Club in Andover. The field will be limited to 36 teams (72 players) who will be treated to lunch in the Flint Hills clubhouse before golf and a first-class cocktail party afterwards. The team entry fee is $550, and entries are now being taken. A portion of the entry fee is tax-deductible. Players who participated in the first KGF Team Championship will have entry priority for the 2010 event. Online entry is available at www.kansasgolf.org. For information about playing or becoming a sponsor, contact Phil Miller, Kansas Golf Foundation executive director, (800) 844-4833 Ext. 205 or by e-mail at phil@kansasgolf.org.
