Reimer glad she made KU decision

KGF Junior Scholars: Gabrielle Reimer

Kansas Golf Foundation scholar Gabrielle Reimer is the first one to admit she’s not the most decisive person in the Sunflower State. But heading into her sophomore year at the University Gabrielle Reimerof Kansas she says she knows choosing KU was the right decision and she’s right where she wants to be.

“I’m not a very good decision maker, so I had been looking at about everything…I just wanted to keep my options open,” says Reimer, a 20-year-old from Meade. “Finally my senior year I started looking a little deeper into schools and took a couple visits to other schools that were private and smaller. Then I went to KU and just decided I was ready for the change, ready for some diversity and the many things KU had to offer.

“It’s been great. KU is definitely where I’m supposed to be. The diversity is nice. You get to meet people from all over with all sorts of backgrounds. And (the school) has all sorts of options. It’s just been a great first year and I’m looking forward to my second year.”

Golf takes time

In Meade, a town of about 1,500 that plays 2A high school sports, Reimer ran cross country all four years in high school and joined the Lady Buffalo golf team her junior season. The cross country squad qualified for the state meet twice and placed in several of the smaller meets along the way, according to Reimer.

She says her brother Andre began playing golf in high school at Meade and that was her first exposure to the game.

“He really enjoyed and went to state his senior year,” she recalled. “And then once I got to high school I thought about it a little bit and finally decided to try it my junior year for the first time and really enjoyed it. So I decided to do it again my senior year. I played with my friends a little bit of the summer, but it was mostly during the (high school) season.”

Playing at the Meade public golf course and developing her game, Reimer says she learned a lot about patience.

“It’s a game that takes time and you have to get to know how to do it,” she says. “Showing up to practice the first day having never golfed was kind of interesting. But the coach helped me out and the rest of the team helped me out and showed me how to stick with it even though it was frustrating at first. I had some difficult times, but it’s a great way to let your feelings out…”

Navigating the future
Reimer entered her sophomore year at Kansas recently and she’s taking Spanish and International Studies classes. She’s involved in Navigators, a Christian student organization which meets weekly on campus, and she lives in the scholarship hall.

“We do a lot of things community-service wise and off campus,” she explains.

With her field of study choice, Reimer says she has plenty of options when it comes to choosing a profession down the road. She’s not really ready to be particularly decisive about that either…
“I’ve considered teaching or even just becoming a missionary at some point in my life,” she says.

Whatever career path she chooses, Reimer remains appreciative of the support she’s been given by the KGF scholarship.

“It was a big honor, especially since I’m not that good of a golfer, to receive the scholarship,” she says. “It’s good to know that people out there are supporting us, to go to college and go further in our lives. It’s really meaningful to know that people care about our education even though we may not know the donors personally -- that they’re still willing to do that is pretty neat.”
