2013 KGA Championship Entries Open Soon

Mark your calendar for February 1.  That’s the day the KGA will open the championship entry portal on the website (www.kansasgolf.org).   It’s always a good idea to enter early – it gives you a reason to practice and you won’t suffer the disappointment of missing the entry deadline!

Notable changes for 2013 are:

- KGA Super Seniors are now designated as contestants age 60 and older (it was 65 last year).

- The KGA Senior Team Championship will be played at the same site and date as the KGA Mid-Am Team Championship, which is September 30 through October 2 at the challenging Firekeeper Golf Course north of Topeka.

Entries for the KGA Senior Series and KGA Mid-Am Series will open on February 1.

Entries for the Kansas Junior Golf Association program will also open on March 1.

All KGA events can be entered from the website or through mail (or walk-in delivery) by printing an entry form from the website.   Please remember that entry deadlines are strictly enforced.

Woody’s Willowbend

One of the most colorful personalities on the PGA Tour, Woody Austin, is now the sole owner of Wichita’s Willowbend Golf Club.   In a deal that closed late last year, Austin purchased the remaining ownership interest from his long-time partners and friends, Rod and Rick Nuckolls.    Rick Nuckolls is now enjoying full retirement while brother Rod will remain as the club’s director of golf while honing his game for some senior professional play.

Jim Elliott has been installed as Willowbend’s general manager.  This new team is continuing its efforts to upgrade the facilities and build the membership roster.

A Change of Scenery

Every off-season we see Kansas club professionals and superintendents moving to new positions.  Here is what we know to date:

Ryan Spencer is the new head golf professional at Sycamore Ridge Golf Course in Spring Hill, Kansas.  Alex Eichman resigned to take a golf job in the Chicago area.

Bill Maynard, a member of the GCSAA board of directors, has resigned as golf course superintendent at Milburn Golf & Country Club in Overland Park, Kansas to accept the superintendent’s position at the Country Club at St. Albans (site of the 2009 USGA State Team Championship where Team Kansas finished as runner-up) located in suburban St. Louis.

Rusty Denner has left his post as general manager of Alvamar Country Club to return to Texas where his family resides.

Tallgrass Country Club (Wichita) has a new golf professional, Mike Solomon, and a new general manager, Chad Mullens. Former Tallgrass golf pro Jim Richmond has moved over to Cherry Oaks Golf Course in Cheney, Kansas.

At Eagle Bend Golf Course in Lawrence, Kansas Darin Pearson has been named general manager while continuing his duties as superintendent.

Steve Gill has retired as the golf professional at Wellington Golf Club and local amateur golfer Derek Harrison has been named the new Director of Golf.

Brian Ward, an assistant golf professional at Wichita Country Club, has been named the new head golf professional of Brookridge Golf & Fitness in Overland Park, Kansas.

Golf Gallery

A member service of the Kansas Golf Association that sits quietly on the KGA website is the photo gallery.  You can see the link to click at the top of home page (or in the left column of the championship pages).   The gallery is organized by year and event and there are also some images that go back a few years (when golf styles were very different!).  You can purchase prints of any image for a very reasonable price.  Take a look – you might find one of you in there!

By the way, if you have a Kansas golf photo that you would like to submit to the KGA for inclusion in the gallery, please email the image to kim@kansasgolf.org.
