Kansans Heading to USGA Championships in July

Mark ElliottThe USGA will be conducting two national championships in July that will have Kansans watching closely and cheering on local golfers who qualified for the national stage.

Mark Elliott of Topeka, a KGA champion of several events, who qualified as an alternate for the 2008 U.S. Open at Oakmont but ultimately did not get into the starting field, has found his way through the gate for a U.S. Senior Open.  Elliott was the low local qualifier for one of two spots at Arbor Links GC in Nebraska City in June.  The 2013 U.S. Senior Open will be played at Omaha Country Club, July 11-14.  The other spot was secured by Great Bend, Kansas golf professional Steve Gotsche.

Elliott reported that he and Gotsche made the trip to Omaha recently for an early practice round at Omaha CC.  Both came away duly impressed with the quality of the course and the noting that the elevation changes that characterize almost every hole are the most “severe” that either of them have ever seen.  Let’s hope that the summer heat and humidity stay away from the area a little longer for Mark, Steve and their caddies health!

Oh yes, there is one more Kansan in the field at the U.S. Senior Open – Tom Watson!

Cole Dillon and Preston Fleenor took the two spots available at the local 36-hole qualifier held at Lawrence Country Club on June 26th for the U.S. Junior Amateur which will be held July 22-27 at the beautiful mountain golf course Martis Camp Club in Truckee, California.

KGA Folds of Honor Tour Entries Open

Golfers of all skill levels are encouraged to come play some “Patriot Golf” at any or all of the three offerings in the inaugural KGA Folds of Honor Tour.  Details can be seen at the KGA website (www.kansasgolf.org) where entries are also made.  The sites are Wichita CC (August 14th), Topeka CC (September 16th) and Meadowbrook CC (October 7th).  These four-ball gross/net competitions are one-day, 18-hole events for which the entry fee is $250 per team and the field is limited to the first 40 teams to enter at each site.   Significant proceeds from these three events will go to the Folds of Honor Foundation, the organization behind the popular Patriot Golf Day.
