Prairie Dunes members shocked by death of Stan George

Stan George, the golf course superintendent of Prairie Dunes Country Club for the last thirty years, died unexpectedly on April 27 at the age of 57.  Memorial services were held on April 30th at Grace Bible Church in Hutchinson.

Stan George“Think of Kansas golf and your thoughts go to Prairie Dunes.  Think of Prairie Dunes and those that know the golf course think of Stan George.  After decades of care and minimal changes under Stan’s watchful eye, Prairie Dunes is the source of pride for all Kansas golfers,” commented Kim Richey, KGA Executive Director.  “Stan was a gentleman and a professional.  He was a mentor to aspiring golf course superintendents and a leader amongst his peers.  Anyone who worked with or for Stan George, appreciated him.”

Stan George achieved the Certified Golf Course Superintendent designation from his professional organization, the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America.  Prairie Dunes hosted several national, regional and state championships during his tenure, including the 2002 U.S. Women’s Open, the 2006 U.S. Senior Open and the 1995 U.S. Senior Amateur.  The Kansas Golf Association, the Trans-Mississippi Golf Association and the Big 8/12 Conference all conducted multiple championships at Prairie Dunes with Stan’s presentation of the golf course that has been consistently rated one of the top 25 venues in the world.

Memorials may be made to the Stan George Children’s Education Fund, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 North Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
