Hutchinson golf and community leader, Gary Mundhenke, passes


Hutchinson area golfers benefited from the many years of volunteer services performed by Gary Mundhenke who died March 4th at the age of 73 from pancreatic cancer.

Gary MundhenkeAs a longtime member of Prairie Dunes Country Club, Gary served on its board of directors and one term as the club’s President.  He was also the Prairie Dunes representative on the board of directors of the Kansas Golf Association in the early nineties and was the director host of the 1993 Kansas Amateur won by Matt Gogel.

When the USGA came calling, Gary was one of the Prairie Dunes members who assumed leadership roles in putting together both the 2002 US Women’s Open and the 2006 US Senior Open.   He served as Co-chairman for the event won by Julie Inkster and as Vice Chairman for the championship won by Allen Doyle.   Then last year he took on a role as the major fund-raiser for the week-long inaugural Golf Channel broadcast of the NCAA Men’s Golf National Championship.

Gary Mundhenke was a 1964 Kansas State graduate with a degree in nuclear engineering and he was the university’s Student Body President in 1963 and 1964.  Gary was a Hutchinson community leader and volunteer as well.  He was involved with the Reno County Chamber of Commerce, his United Methodist Church and the local hospital.
