Champions Crowned at Mid-Am Team & Senior Team

Windy conditions on day one of the 2018 Mid-Amateur Team & Senior Team Championships didn’t stop a full field of teams from taking on the challenge at Manhattan Country Club.  The day one morning Shamble format and afternoon Foursomes format provided a difficult challenge for the teams with wind gusts sustained at 30 mph and gusting close to 45 mph.

Michael Hillyard, Leawood and Matthew Quandt, Overland Park captured their first KGA championship in the Mid-Amateur Team.  Hillyard and Quandt posted a final round 4-under par 66 in the Four-Ball format to finish at 8-under par 202 total for the 54-hole championship.  Quandt and Hillyard separated themselves from the field of teams in the second round Foursomes play when they posted an impressive 3-under par 67 which was six shots better than any other team for the round.  The team of TJ Vilkanskas, Manhattan and Grant Vollertsen, Garden City finished in second at 2-under par 208 total.  Derek Harrison of Wellington and Aaron Sheaks of Lawrence finished in third place at 1-under par 209 total.

In the Senior Team Championship, Randy Vautravers, Andover and Brian Burris captured victory at 7-over par 217 total.  Steve Newman, Wichita and Tracy Chamberlin, Wichita finished in runner-up position one shot back.  AJ Jenkins and Ray Brundige finished in third place at 11-over par 221 total.  Brundige provided for an exciting moment in the opening round of the championship after making a hole in one on the par 3 13th hole.  It was Brundige’s second hole in one in the last three weeks!

In the Super Senior Division of the Senior Team Championship, Steve McKinney and Joe Rothwell, both of Wichita, edged past champions Bill Quattlebaum, Wichita and Ben York, Wichita by one shot.  McKinney and Rothwell finished at 13-over par 223 total.   The teams of Lynn Dickey/Stewart Shockley and Bob Bezek/Dick Stuntz tied for third place at
